Communicate Desire for Marriage

Dear Dr. Dave and Dr. Dee,

I have been best friends with the man I am seeing for 10 years, and we have been dating for about 2 years. He says he loves me, but is not ready to walk down the aisle. I have hinted repeatedly that it is time for a deeper commitment, i.e. engagement ring or I am leaving. I had hoped for a ring for Christmas, but didn't receive it. Should I put his number on call block and not look back?

Signed,

What To Do?

Dear What To Do,

If you have been best friends for 10 years, then you must have a special relationship. If he is not ready for marriage, but you are, then you need to sit down and have a long serious talk with him. Hints to him about wanting a ring are not direct enough. You need to communicate your feelings. You don't necessarily need to end the friendship, but you may have to end the intimate relationship if marriage is important to you, but not to him.
